If you had to describe your perfect living room, many of us would say you want something cozy and comfortable. A room that feels warm and inviting, somewhere to relax and spend some quality family time. Here are a few elements you can EASILY incorporate to make your space a haven of warmth and coziness.
Warm Color Palette
A color palette that includes soft neutrals like beige, cream, off white and ivory will evoke a cozy and inviting ambiance. Now this doesn’t mean you need to whip out the paint cans. You can easily weave in these tones through textiles like curtains, pillows, and blankets.
Layered Lighting
Different light sources such as overhead fixtures, floor lamps, table lamps and sconces provide varying levels of illumination that create layers of depth and dimension. They enhance the visual appeal of the room while creating a more inviting atmosphere.
Cozy Texture and Fabrics
Integrate plush and soft textures like faux fur (one of my personal faves) velvet, chunky knit or chenille into upholstery, pillows, throws and rugs. A soft and plush area rug can help to define a seating area and add warmth to the floors.
Fireplace or Faux Fireplace
This might be the ultimate cozy factor; picture laying by the light of a crackling fire, sipping a rum snuggler. (There’s a reason why all those rom-coms have a crackling fire on a fur blanket scene, amiright?!) Ok now get shirtless Ryan Gossling off your mind, and back to the article. Fireplaces (and mantles) naturally add warmth and a focal point to the room. Even if you have a faux plug-in, or one that doesn’t function, having the fireplace element in a room will definitely up the cozy factor.
Natural Elements
Bringing in organic elements such a botanicals, stone and wood add a sense of warmth and a connection to the outdoors. It doesn’t have to be a big ol’ wood beam or massive stone fireplace. You can find decorative items in organic materials such as planters, pots, trays, picture frames, vases, bowls, figurines, etc.
Accent Walls & Wallpaper
Opt for a textural or warm toned wallpaper to bring in that warm ambiance. Consider a brick, reclaimed wood or slat accent wall to add depth. Hang a gallery wall of framed photos, art or a collection of baskets to not only make the wall visually appealing, but make the room feel cozier.
Comfortable Seating
Arrange furniture in a way that promotes conversation and comfort. Use upholstered furniture with deep cushions and consider adding a mix of chairs, sofas, poufs, etc. Disclaimer: If you read this post and say Surry Place told you to buy that new sofa, I will deny it! You can simply layer your existing furniture with pillows and blankets to give it a plush upgrade.
Do you have a vision? Then get at it! These tips will help you make your living room a sanctuary where you can unwind, entertain and create memories. From choosing the right color palette, to embracing plush textures, and playing with lighting, it only takes a little bit of thought to craft a living room that will be the cozy retreat you desire.
