Facebook marketplace strikes again! I was daaang excited when I scored these cherry stained wood bunkbeds for FREE. Obviously, starting with a free piece of furniture is a great way to keep your costs down. But how do you score free furniture? And how do limit the cost of materials? Keep reading to find out!
Materials List & My Costs:
One good thing about painting a lot, is you always have leftover paint! So when I decided to take on a new project, I can usually just shop my garage shelves for what I need. My cost for this project was under $200, but cost is different for everyone depending on what materials you already have/don’t have.
- Bunk beds $0 (found on Facebook marketplace for free)
- Detached stair case $100 (Facebook marketplace)
- Paint sprayer (optional) $0 (already had)
- Primer $0 (already had)
- White paint $0 (already had)
- Satin clear spray paint $15 ($4/each at local hardware store)
- 1” paint brush $0 (already had)
- Foam paint roller $0 (already had)
- Copper pipe $60 ($2/foot, they cut the size I needed at the local hardware store so I didn’t have to pay for unused pipe.) **** I have to say, these are not the sturdiest material, and seem like they might bend easily. For my 2 and 4 year old kids, they do their job, prevent anyone from falling off so I am happy with my choice. But I just need to throw that out there.
- Copper tube strap $8 (local hardware store)
- Black hammered spray paint $8 ($4/each at local hardware store)
- Vinyl Tiles $0 (free at garage sale)

Tips for an Inexpensive Furniture Refurbishment:
- Shop secondhand. I always find treasures on Facebook marketplace, at garage sales, even on the side of the road. Patience and searching often is key. I searched for bunk beds for weeks before I found this deal, and I jumped on it right away. When you see an item for cheap or free, you have to move quick. I often see items taken within the first 30 minutes of being listed. Facebook marketplace is also a good place to look for materials too! I have found reclaimed wood scraps, fencing, and all sorts of cool materials.
- Shop the boo-boo paint at your hardware store. Ok I am sure that’s not what it is called, but basically when the paint counter mixes up something that never gets picked up or is off, they sell it for cheaper.
- Think outside the box. For this project I initially wanted to use galvanized pipe for the bunk bed railings. But it turned out being more than I wanted to spend. My alternative & cheaper options were cable, aluminum pipe, copper pipe or thick nautical rope. Seeing as my hardware store was out of the aluminum pipe I wanted, I saw the copper pipe in stock and went with that.
- Invest in bulk painting supplies. If you love a paint color and know you will use it multiple times, its worth investing in a larger quantity. I have used paint that is 4 years old and usually all it needs is just a good mixing. I buy bulk paint brushes, rollers, paint tape and other misc supplies on amazon. It saves money and I am always ready if I wake up and decide to do an impromptu paint job.
- Invest in or rent a paint sprayer. Not only will this save you time, it will give your furniture a consistent professional looking surface. I have used my sprayer on 10+ pieces of furniture, plus it can utilized for walls, decks, and so many other projects. That gives me an average cost of $16 per project.

There you have it! I am willing to bet you have something laying around your house that could use a revamp, so what are you waiting for? Pick up a paintbrush and go do it!
I am so glad you found it helpful!
